Singles Champion Out

Back to news

The Men’s last 16 singles were played tonight, and the current holder went out and there were a number of comebacks.

Firstly current holder Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans lost out to club mate Chris Palmer, and Palmer won the tie with the very last bowl, where he removed Yeomans shot bowl to win 21 – 20. Palmer looking to equal the record of 4 singles titles, will be at home again next week and will take on another Gosforth bowler in 2022 runner up Josh Minto. As Minto won tonight at Benfield beating Peter Carr 21 – 10.

It was a good evening for the Dragons tonight, as the 3 of the 4 St. Georges players progressed. Phil Harvey as per previous post continued his excellent form and run, and beat Gosforth’s Paul Timney 21 – 8 away from home. Harvey will take on fellow club mate Chris McGready, as Chris recovered from 11 – 5 and 16 – 10 down to win 21 – 17, as Chris scored 11 shots on 6 of the last 7 ends to clinch victory. The last Dragon to win tonight was Alan Gemmill, who took on another Gosforth bowler in Dan Targar. Targar looked to be in control of the match winning 14 – 7, and also 17 – 12. But Gemmill was not to be denied, and scored on the last 5 ends to win 21 – 17. Gemmill will be away next week to 2022 semi finalist in Morpeth’s Nick Armstrong, as tonight Armstrong beat Cramlington’s Tony Fantozzi 21 – 14.

The last two ties to report on saw an all Gosforth tie between Simon Richardson and Dane Ross. Ross took an early lead and led 9 – 5 at 9 ends, but unfortunately for Ross he only managed 2 more singles in the next 9 ends and Richardson won 21 – 11. Richardson will be at home again next week and will take on Forest Hall’s Andy Weir. Weir fought of a late comeback game against St. Georges Dragon’s Karl Jameson, as Weir was 20 – 4 up, but Jameson then scored a 3, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1 to get back to 20 – 15, and unfortunately for Jameson, Weir scored the vital single to take the tie 21 – 15.  Weir was also in action in the afternoon at Wooler BC, where he lost to Brian Davidson 18 – 17; although that doesn’t tell the full story as both Andy and his wife Jess forgot to take their bowls and borrowed some club bowls at Wooler!
