George Batey Retirement

Back to news

As some of you are very much aware Alnwick’s George Batey stepped down or should I say retired from his Bowls Northumberland posts / duties on Sunday (3rd) at the Men’s section AGM.

George had served on the County Executive for 33 years. During this period George had the great honour of being County President on 1993, and then again in 2011. George was Assistant Secretary from 2001 to 2017, and then took over from John Cleverley. George has been Secretary and Bowls Northumberland Administrator since this time. In addition, George also was Treasurer, where he stepped for 3 years (2018 to 2021) to cover this vacancy and key role.

George was also very active with county teams – that is Alsop, Muras, Middleton, Balcomb and White Rose and very much supported all teams. George was supportive of youngsters and their development at clubs and county teams. As for one significant achievement was when the White Rose (County under 25 Double Rinks) won the National Title at Worthing in 2000.

We would like to thank George for all his hardwork, time, commitment to his many roles throughout this long period, where he has served Northumberland County Bowls Association and then Bowls Northumberland.

Enjoy your retirement George, and again many thanks for everything that you have done for us.
