Barke bites Curtis!

Friday evening brought the last 16 of the Men’s Fours and saw the current holders crash out.

The current holders Gosforth’s Jimmy Curtis went out at New Delaval Knights tonight. The New Delaval quartet had a change in skip this week, with new Middleton Cup skip Ant Barke substituting for Aaron Robson. The game was tight early on, with Delaval holding a slight lead of 5 – 3 at 5 ends, but the Gosforth team scored 7 shots over the next 3 ends to take a 10 – 5 lead. But Delaval hit back scoring on the next 4 ends themselves to lead 11 – 10 with 2 ends to play. Curtis managed to get the shot on the 14th end, despite being 5 down, but this was the last score for Curtis as Barke converted the head on the last end and scored the decisive shot to take the tie 12 – 11.

In the other fixtures tonight there were decisive home wins for Forest Hall’s Chris Coan over Seaton Sluice’s Iain Dickinson 19 – 5, Coan will now travel to St. Georges to face Gary Myerscough who defeated Forth’s Tom McMullen 22 – 3. The final game in the top half of the draw saw another home win, this time for Gosforth’s Mick McGreevy, who beat Rockcliffe Rollers Darryl Illingworth 26 – 5.

In the bottom half of the draw Cramlington BC continued their good form, this time the rink skipped by Bob Harrison beat Benfield’s Jim Taylor 21 – 12; Harrison will have home advantage again next week, and will face Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans, who won at Wooler 22 – 7. The final two games saw another two home wins, firstly for Rothbury’s Rob Donkin, who beat Percy’s Stuart Graham-Scott 24 – 6; Donkin will play Collingwood’s Keith Armstrong at home next week, as Armstrong beat Gosforth Garden Village Norman Keith 16 – 11.

The quarter finals are scheduled for next Friday – 16th July.
