Men’s Triples 1/4 Finals

Back to news

The Men’s Triples quarter finals were played this evening, with ties at St. Georges, Portland and Gosforth.

There were two games tonight at Gosforth where holders (or two of the 3) Chris Yeomans had a comprehensive win over Benfield’s Alan Proctor (under Ian Webb name) 25 – 6. The other tie at Gosforth saw club colleagues Jimmy Curtis play Mick McGreevy, in a high quality game the lead changed hands throughout. McGreevy started well scoring a 5 on end 2 but by end 6 the score was 7 – 6 in favour of McGreevy, and by 11 ends the score was 10 a piece. Curtis then scored a 6, but McGreevy responded with a 4 of his own, and then scored on the next 3 ends to lead 20 – 16 with only 2 ends remaining. Curtis collected a shot on end 17 but McGreevy scored on the last end to take the tie 21 – 17.

Away from Gosforth it also saw another all club contest at St. Georges, where Neil Aitchison took on Phil Harvey. Harvey’s trio started well and led 6 – 1 after 6 ends, Aitchison hit back with a 4 on the 7th end to trail by only 6 – 5. However Harvey scored on the next two ends collecting two singles to lead 8 – 5, Aitchison scored on the next end to reduce the gap to 8 – 6. Harvey then scored 3 2’s on 3 of the next 4 ends to extend their lead to 14 – 7, and Harvey completed the tie scoring two singles on the 16th and 17th ends to win 16 – 7.

In the last quarter final it saw Portland’ triple of John Taylor, Colin Boyle and Gren Richardson face another Gosforth triple, this time in Steve Miller, Les Yeomans and Peter Duffy. The game was relatively tight early on and saw a score line of 8 – 7 after 10 ends in Richardson’s favour. A decisive count of 4 in end 13 for the Portland trio seemed to change the course of the game, and Richardson then scored on 3 of the last 4 ends played to take to the tie 16 – 9.

This now places the winning triples in the semi-finals which will be played over the semi-final weekend – 23 – 26 July.
