Men’s Singles Round 4

Back to news

Monday evening brought the conclusion to the Men’s 4th round of the singles – and the reigning champion remains on course, plus two former winners are still in the hunt, but two former holders bit the dust!

The reigning champion Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans, fresh from his bronze medal in the British Isles Series playing for England at Ayr over the last 3 days, faced former county and Benfield star Stan Lant tonight, and Yeomans won 21 – 9. Next week Yeomans will face 3 time former singles winner and club mate Chris Palmer, where Palmer won at Collingwood BC defeating Fabian Scott 21 – 14. Across the green at Collingwood tonight another Gosforth player was in action, in last years runner up Josh Minto, who took on former colleague (from Backworth Welfare) and past winner Ian Brown, and in a close contest Minto won 21 – 17.  Minto will be away again next week and will take on Benfield’s Peter Carr, where Carr edged out Seaton Sluice’s Ian Dickinson 21 – 19.

It was a good evening for St. Georges Dragons as all of their players that played, slayed all of their opponents this evening. At Gosforth BC, 2012 champion Phil Harvey beat Gosforth’s Tuang Lee, and 1998 runner up Karl Jameson beat Steve Ross. Harvey will be bck at Gosforth (again) next week to play Paul Timney (Timney had received a walk-over as St. Georges Keith Ellison was on holiday). Ellison’s club colleague Chris McGready had a very good away win at New Delaval Knights, holding off a comeback from home favourite Ant Barke, to win 21 – 19. It was not a good evening for the knights, as there other representative that was playing in Tom Symons lost at Westerhope BC to Gareth Heard 21 – 20, where Heard fought back from 19 – 12 and 20 – 18 down to get over the line. Also at Westerhope Cramlington’s Tony Fantozzi ended the good run of Peter Gray; Fantozzi will now travel to Morpeth, to take on last years beaten semi-finalist Nick Armstrong, as Armstrong recorded a good victory at Forth defeating Eddie Young 21 – 13.

The last former champion to bow out tonight was Gosforth’s Brian Houghton, as Houghton lost in an all Gosforth affair to Dan Targar. Targar will take on St. George’s Alan Gemmill next week, Gemmill received a walk over from Ryan Warnes-Hall due to a medical situation. The last ties to report on, and are in the same part of the draw (top half – bottom section); Gosforth’s Simon Richardson recorded a good home win over Benfield’s Andy Johnson, Richardson will be at home again next week and will play club mate Dane Ross, where Ross had a super away win tonight at Ashington BC beating George Richardson 21 – 17. The last game to report and took some 27 ends, and was also a battle of Rangers and Celtic fans – and saw Forest Hall’s Andy Weir score on the last 6 ends to recover from 17 – 12 down (also was 10 – 4 down) to beat Gosforth’s James McKenna. Weir will be home next week, where Andy will face St. Georges Dragons Karl Jameson.

Round 5 is scheduled for next Monday. Well done to all concerned this evening.
