Women’s Semi-Finals Day 1

Back to news

Well don’t you just love our summer weather!!! NOT!!!

BNWS saw the first set of our semi finals played in miserable weather today at Benfield BC. Even though we got a soaking, the standard of play was still excellent and the spectators who braved the weather were treated to some great games!

Morning session:

4 Bowl Singles Semi Finals:

  • F.Charlton (M) 21 v D.Tait (M) 6
  • M.Angove (NW) 2 v V.Symons (WR) 21

The scores in both these matches don’t do the games justice really, as there were some great shots from all 4 players, with some very close heads! However on the day it was Fiona and Victoria who played the strongest to knock their opponents off the jack and secure their places in the final.

4 Bowl Champion of Champions Semi Finals:

  • N.Scott (ND) 21 v S.Storey (G) 16

Sheila was ahead in this game 6-3 after 6 ends. Naomi pulled it back to 5-6 over the next 2 ends. Sheila extended her lead to 9-6 after end 11 but Naomi levelled the game at 9-9 taking a 3 on end 12. She followed this with a 4 on end 13 to take a lead of 13-9. Sheila followed with a 1&2 to cut her deficit to 12-13, but Naomi answered with 2×2 to lead 17-12 after 17 ends. Sheila managed to score a further 2×2 but Naomi also scored a 2 & 2×1 to win the game 21-16.

  • A.Pearson (PE) 18 v R.Cartwright (BD) 21

Ann took an early lead in this game but after 6 ends the game was level again at 6-6. Rachel scored 1 on end 7 but then Ann scored a 2&4 on the following 2 ends to take a lead of 12-7. Rachel took the following 3 ends with 2×1&2 to cut her deficit to 11-12. Ann came back with a 2 on end 13 to extend her lead to 14-11. Rachel got in her stride and took the following 3 ends with 2×2&1 to lead 16-14. After end 19 they were level again on 17-17 and it was all to play for. Rachel won the next 2 ends to lead 19-17 and despite Ann scoring 1 on the 22nd end it was Rachel who stayed strong and finished the game on 21-18.

Naomi will meet Rachel in the final.

This was a game of 2 halves really. Benfield were leading 3-0 after 2 ends. W&M then levelled the game to 3-3 after 5 ends. Benfield won the game with a 2 on the last end to win 22-14.

Gosforth Coxlodge will meet Benfield in the final.

1 round of the Senior Fours Semi Final

  • K.Milner (M) 18 v S.Storey (G) 12

This was certainly the noisiest game of the day with some great play to entertain the spectators! After 5 ends the teams were level at 3-3. Then Gosforth took the next 3 ends with 2×1&3 to take a lead of 8-3. Morpeth scored a 3 on the next end then Gosforth replied with a 2 to keep their lead 10-6. Morpeth replied with a 3 to cut their deficit to 9-10 after 11

ends. Both teams fought hard and it was Morpeth who took a lead of 13-12 after 15 ends. They were then on a roll as they took the final 3 ends with a 1&2×2 to win the game 18-12.

Morpeth go through to the final and we will see who their opponent is tomorrow!

Congratulations to all the players today who have earned their place in the county finals and for some of them their place at the National Finals at Leamington Spa! You can now book your accommodation!!

A big thanks to Benfield BC for hosting this event and getting their green in tip top condition despite the terrible weather the green ran beautifully!

Thanks to the ladies of Benfield for providing non stop hot drinks and fantastic refreshments which were greatly appreciated.

Thanks to Jason for umpiring today.

Thanks to all the spectators who turned up to support all the players!

And guess what we do it all again tomorrow for our next round of semi finals! Bring your brollies, cushions and wellies. I certainly don’t think we will need suncream or sunglasses but we can live in hope!!

We start at 9.30am tomorrow so players should arrive for 9am.

Thank you – Competition Secretary, Bev Ware.
