Women’s County Finals – Day 2

Back to news

Well we certainly hit lucky for the second day of our County Finals at Alnwick BC today. The rain managed to keep away, just the odd drop of rain here and there but boy was it windy!!

Play commences on Day 2 of N’land Finals

Thank you once again to the members of Alnwick Bowling Club who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Sorting out all the equipment and keeping everyone happy with a steady flow of hot drinks and fabulous food, it was very much appreciated.

A big thank you to Rachel Cartwright, our umpire for the day who did a great job.

Spectators were thin on the ground today but those who made the journey were given some great matches to watch.

Morning Final:

Women’s Senior Fours:

S.Storey (G) 14 v P.Browne (BD) 13

This was an exciting game to watch with the lead changing rapidly in the first half. Gosforth took a 5-0 lead after 3 ends. Benfield took the next 3 ends to bring the scores level again at 5-5. Gosforth scored 1 on end 7 and Benfield answered with a 3 on end 8 to take the lead of 8-6. Benfield managed to keep in front for the rest of the game even though Gosforth were fighting back. By the end of the 17th Benfield were leading 13-11. The last end was very tense as the game could have gone either way. It was Gosforth who secured a 3 to finish the game on 14-13.

Congratulations to Gosforth on winning this final, they will represent Northumberland at the National Finals at Leamington Spa in the Senior Fours. Commiserations to Benfield who were so close to victory!

A great game to watch.

Senior Fours Champions, 2023

Afternoon Final:

Our highlight of the finals weekend for the Women, was our 4 Bowl Singles Final:

N. Scott (NDK) 17 v V. Symons (WR) 21

This was really a game of two halves as they say! Naomi made a great start leading 5-0 after 3 ends. By the end of the 10th end Naomi had increased her lead to 10-5. Victoria scored a 1 on the following end, but Naomi kept on the pressure scoring a 2&1 to lead 13-6 after 13 ends. This then became Naomi’s unlucky number, as Victoria finally got in her stride and took the next 4 ends with 1, 2×3, &4 to take the lead of 17-13. Naomi scored 1 on the following 2 ends to cut her deficit down to 15-17. Victoria scored a 2 on end 20 taking the lead to 19-15. Naomi immediately replied with a 2 on the next end taking it to 17-19. On end 22 it was Victoria who scored a 2 to secure her win of 21-17 and she will represent Northumberland in the National Finals at Leamington Spa.

Congratulations to both ladies who played exceptionally well and gave us a great game to watch this afternoon as the concluding match in our Women’s County Finals.
