*White Rose Selection – updated*

Back to news

The White Rose (Inter-County under 25 Double rink) sees Northumberland straight through to the regional finals at Redcar on Sunday 18th July. We will face Lincolnshire at 10 am, if successful we will be back on at 2 pm against the winners of Lancashire v Yorkshire game.

Over the last two weekends the Team Manager has run two trials at Gosforth BC with 12 juniors taking part each time. The players ranged from 12 years up to 23 years of age, although to note some of the juniors are 12, 13, 14, 15. We also had a slightly over 25 triple on the second trial to help out – thanks to Michael London, Jacky Taylor and Jimbo Curtis.

The selection has been very difficult as especially in the second trial all of the players stepped up their performance from the previous weekend. The trials consisted of different formats, pairs, 2 and 3 bowl triples and fours, and those that have missed out are unfortunate. Overall all the players involved were a credit not only to themselves but their clubs where they play out of normally – a big well done to all concerned.

The team selected is as follows: –

James Watson (SS), Luke Heard (WH), Richard Curtis (G), George Rogan (HW);

Jan Walton (WH), Alex Scott (ND), Matthew Bishop (BD),Josh Norris (NB);

This is the 8 players in the team, as a withdraw – the above will change (as in order / and rinks). I’ve just put Josh in instead of Aaron (as he has withdrawn).

Reserves from: Alex Simpson (BW)

As you know without our juniors and development we will have nothing, and potentially no future. The trials were great in seeing the youngsters apply their trade and their play has been fantastic to see, along with the attitude and commitment shown.

Team Manager John would also like to thank the parents and grandparents for bringing them along each day. It was also very pleasing a number of spectators came along each day to see and support the juniors involved.

Also to note for the future – in the Northern Counties Championships, this year Yorkshire are hosting and I understand the venue is York RI and is played over the weekend of 14 / 15 August, with the Under 25 rink event taking place on the 15th. This will be played in a round robin format (although depending on number of entries) against the other Northern Counties (Durham, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Lancashire) who enter. The rink can be mixed as well, and this year I plan to enter TWO rinks to represent Bowls Northumberland.
