2023 Walker Cup N’land v Lancashire
Well we had a super day out for our Walker Cup match at Wigton v Lancashire playing in the glorious sunshine and as you know we won overall 46-28, so we go through to the regional finals at Redcar on 25th June.
On rink 3 we had Victoria Symons, Pam Varley, Dot Taylor and Sheila Storey.
They got off to a slower start, with Lancashire leading 8-0 after 5 ends. But then Northumberland got on the board winning 1 on the 6th end and then there was no holding them back. By the 10th end the score was 8-8. The next two ends saw Lancashire pull two back, but Northumberland fought back to 10-10 on the 12th end. Some tremendous play saw Northumberland extend their lead to 17- 12 after the 16th end. Lancashire tried hard to keep in the game pulling it back to 17-14 after 18 ends. Steady play saw Northumberland take their lead to 18-14 as Lancashire conceded on end 20!
On rink 2 we had Rachel Cartwright, Mattea Ross, Christine Gardener and Bev Ware. We took an early lead and were lying 6-1 after 4 ends. Lancashire took the next two ends so we were just leading 7-6 after 6 ends. Then the Northumberland team got in their stride and took the following 9 ends with a 4, 2 x 3’s, 5 x 2’s and a 1 to take a fabulous lead of 27-7 after 15 ends. Lancashire made a last push to pull back 4 points on the next 3 ends making the score 27-11 after 18 ends. However the Northumberland team secured their victory 28-14 after 20 ends as Lancashire had no option but to concede the game.
Brilliant team play by both teams and we were spurred on by our happy band of supporters who could be heard across the greens, and it made such a difference so a big thank you to those ladies who travelled with us, including our two reserves, Susan MacDonald and Jess Weir.
Fab end to the day with a cup of tea and birthday cake supplied by Allison Storey, who unfortunately could not travel with us today, but we certainly all enjoyed the cakes and Happy Birthday to you Allison. Followed by drinks all round bought by our very happy secretary Sheila Storey, to make it a perfect afternoon!
