The focus shifted entirely to the bottom half of the draw for Round 2 of the Blue Riband Men’s Singles, and what a spectacular night of bowls it turned out to be! As the race to 21 shots intensified, the greens served up agonizingly tight grandstand finishes alongside some absolute masterclasses.

While the bottom half took center stage this week, the top half of the draw will be back in action next week on June 15th to keep this fascinating competition rolling.

 

The Grandstand Finishes

Bateman Edges an Absolute Classic: The match of the night undoubtedly belonged to J. Bateman (AM) and M. Dickinson (ST). The pair traded brilliant drawing shots end after end in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse, with Bateman digging deep to secure a breathtaking 21–20 victory at the absolute limit.

Green Halts Fleming: In a fantastic tactical battle of wits, P. Green (HS) managed to hold off a fierce challenge from K. Flemming (GC), keeping his composure to book his spot in the next round with a tight 21–19 victory.

 

The Wrecking Crews: Complete Dominance

While some had to grind it out to the very last wood, a handful of players found their weight immediately and blew their ties completely open.

Harvey on a Rampage: S. Harvey (G) put on the most ruthless performance of the evening, giving A. Bryden (AM) zero room to breathe in a blistering 21–5 demolition.

Scott and Pomfrey in Uncompromising Mood: F. Scott (C) was in identical form, completely dominating his tie against O. Mckenzie (AP) 21–2, while Benfield’s A. Pomfrey (BD) powered past R. Taylor (NP) 21–6.

 

Key Results From Around the Greens

Gosforth Heavyweights March On: It was an excellent night for the club as J. Minto (G) put on a highly efficient display to dismantle D. Mordue (CC) 21–9, while BJ Byles (G) carried fine form onto the green to defeat J. Whitfield (F) 21–12.

Benfield Double: Joining Pomfrey in the next round is D. Ross (BD), who secured another fine win for the Benfield club by holding off a spirited challenge from S. Wood (AS) 21–15.

Wilson and Armstrong Class: M. Wilson (AM) navigated a tricky encounter against J. Cairns (AS) to secure a strong 21–12 win, while N. Armstrong (G) showed immense discipline to defeat R. Biddiss (NB) 21–15.
