Round 1 – games played today with 2 very strong wins and 2 closer games:
J. Gledhill (NB) 9 v C. Brodie (P) 24
Percy took a strong lead taking a 5 on the first end. After 9 ends they had extended their lead to 12-4. Newbiggin replied with a 3 on the 10th end but Percy took 3 out of the next 4 ends with 2×2 & 5 to push ahead 21-8. They continued to put the pressure on Newbiggin and finished with a decisive win of 24-9 🎉
F. Charlton (FH) 18 v R. Bartram (BD) 6
Forest Hall took an early lead of 14-0 after 7 ends. After 11 ends they had extended their lead to 17-3. Despite doubling their score Benfield called it a day on the 14th end giving Forest Hall a decisive win of 18-6 🎉
B. Ware (WM) 15 v V. Errington (BD) 17
After 4 ends these teams were level on 3-3. Benfield took a lead of 5-3 after 6 ends. W&M replied with a 3 on the following end to lead 6-5. Then Benfield fought back taking the following 3 ends to lead 12-6. By end 13 W&M had cut their deficit back to 10-13. With some very close heads by end 15 Benfield had extended their lead to 16-10. Going into end 17 Benfield were leading 16-12, W&M were holding 5 but a fantastic drawing shot from Benfield’s skip gave them that end 17-12. W&M scored 3 on the final end but it wasn’t enough to level the game. So Benfield came out on top 17-15 🎉
B. Bell (M) 16 v A. Stevenson (GC) 21
Morpeth took an early lead of 7-1 after 5 ends. Gosforth Coxlodge immediately replied with a 5&3 on the next 2 ends to take the lead 9-7. By end 11 they were level 11-11 and by end 14 they were level again on 13-13. Then Gosforth Coxlodge took the next 3 ends with 2×2&5 to take a lead of 20-13. Morpeth replied with a 3 on end 17 to cut their deficit to 16-20. But Gosforth Coxlodge scored 1 on the final end to finish 21-16 🎉
So we now have our semi finalists in this competition:
