Northern Championships – Silver!

Back to news

On Sunday 4th May Appleby hosted the Women’s second ever Northern Counties Champion of Champions event, our 2024 champions (or finalists) took to the green to face our northern neighbours on what was a rather chilly day in contrast to this last week!

Pairs: Northumberland champions A Stevenson & H Smith from GC lost 6 – 21.

Fours: Northumberland finalist K Moore, D Higgins, C Dawson & B Ware of WM narrowly lost out by 2 shots against Yorkshire (11 -13)

Singles: Northumberland Champion V Dent of WR faced Yorkshire for 2 sets of 7 ends. Set 1 tied at 4:4, but Vic sadly lost out 3-6 on set 2.

Triples: 2/3 of our Northumberland Champions weren’t available so our unlikely trio of R Holmes of GC (triples finalist) joined BD’s R Bartram (fours champion) and skipped by R Cartwright (trips + fours champion) took victory over Yorkshire then sadly lost out to Cumbria in the final, securing SILVER and Northumberland’s first medal in these championships.

Silver medal: R Bartram | R Cartwright| R Holmes

However – that’s not all! Our ‘Angels of the North’ Amy Rose team, comprised of Yorkshire/ Cumbria and Northumberland met for the first time where Yorkshire Junior Development lead Cressida Fordy took the girls through an ice breaker, series of drills and an Australian pairs match to test their skills and support the team manager’s with their selection process.

Here they are with their brand new kit! For those eagle eyed, we only had 4 players available today, but we remain hopeful for our 5th being available for the Regional event on May 31st – if you are aware of any juniors (U24) who would like to take part in a day of bowling at Dunnington, please get in touch with Rachel Cartwright ASAP.

Once again, Northumberland would like to thank Appleby for being so welcoming with hot sandwiches and a delicious spread, we thank the umpire for working tirelessly all day, for our spectators braving the cold to sit rink side, cheering on all teams and of course to our 2024 finalists for representing Northumberland in the Northern Championships event!

Here’s hoping for another medal (or 2!) next year.
