NC V Cumbria Report (2nd Aug)

Back to news

Satnav buzzing and raring to go (to anywhere other than Dalston bowling green) with team members in the car we set off. All I can say is thank goodness for google maps.

Northumberland’s routine this season has taken on board before a match begins to doing “warm ups”. This is where you think you have arrived with 24 players and all of a sudden you barely have fourteen !!!!! However these warm ups prevent pulled muscles and hamstring tweaks especially when cold and damp. Warm ups also give the jaw muscles a rest.

Cumbria as usual had all their big guns out, even one running late.

Northumberland got off to a slow start, after 5 ends were 18 shots adrift and after 10 ends worryingly 31 shots down but the sound of the chocolate bar wrapping paper seemed to spur on one or two rinks, Dorothy Taylors foursome along with Thelma Napiers gang realised what we were there for, a win. Thelma scoring after the 10th end every end but one resulting in a hard fought win along with Dorothy Taylors team battling against the great Jeanette Bell picking up 11 shots to win 16 v 11. Shelagh Carters rink in the final run in took 8 shots off her opposition to go down by just 1 shot. From being down 20 shots at 15 ends to ending the game with a deficit of just 13 shots showed great tenacity and spirit.

This was our last game of the Northern Counties season and the ladies have proved that with warm ups, chocolate bars and the threat of Red Bull next season the worlds their oyster. Well done Team.
