Friday evening brought the conclusion of round four, with two former winners still in the hunt – St. Georges Dragons Phil Harvey (2013) and current holders in Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans. Although I must add there is another former champion in Mr Train (won in 1994 and 2008), now of course playing with different players etc now.
It was a good night for the Dragons tonight, as they slayed their opposition (although not really on the second game!). Firstly the rink skipped by M Bowyer, beat New Delaval Knights Alex Scott (entry under A Barke) 22 – 11. The other dragons triple in Phil Harvey, as mentioned above – won 18 – 17 at home to Percy’s Brian Rodgerson. But that does not tell you the full story about the game. Phil’s triple only won on 6 of the 18 ends, but importantly for Mick, Steve and Phil the 6th end they scored on, was the last end where they secured a double to win the tie 18 – 17. Phil will now travel to Rockcliffe Rollers; where the Rollers continued their good season, with Stuart Blackett recording a great away win at Seghill 22 – 12 over Ian Nolan. Chris Yeomans (Gosforth) won at home tonight beating Amble’s Alex Bryden 24 – 6. Chris and co will travel to St. Georges next week to face M Bowyer.
In the bottom half of the draw there were good away wins for Benfield’s Jonty King (entry under Alan Gemmill), Jonty won at Forest Hall defeating Chris Coan. Ashington’s George Richardson won at New Delaval Knights Graham Sivell. Graham was 10 nil down after 6 ends, and managed to only trail 10 – 8 after 10 ends. At 14 ends Richardson led 12 – 11, but George then scored a 3, then a 2, to lead 17 – 11, and despite the Knights best efforts Paul, Christian and George progressed 17 – 14. Next up for George will be a home tie against Gosforth’s Paul Timey. Paul, playing with Roy Goldsmith, Richard Train, recorded a good home win over Health & Security’s Stu Williams 20 – 9.
The last result to report was another away win, this time for Gosforth’s Michael Bennett at Hexham Elvaston S Benson, skipped by Mark Terry. As tonight Michael recovered from a 7 nil deficit, then a 9 – 4 deficit at 7 ends. From this point Michael’s triples scored 12 unanswered shots to lead 16 – 9 after 13 ends, Hexham hit back with a four, then a single to only trail 16 – 14, but the Gosforth trio scored 3 singles on the last 3 ends to win 19 – 14. Michael will be away next week again, and will travel to Benfield to take on Jonty King.
Well done to all concerned tonight.
