Men’s Triples

Friday night saw the continuation of the Men’s Triples Championship – with the round of 16 being played.

With holders Gosforth’s Jimbo Curtis crashing out last week, their conquerors clubmates Gosforth clubmates Michael Bennett continued their progression with another victory against another Gosforth triple in Peter Duffy. Former champions and another Gosforth triple in Chris Yeomans stayed on course for another title as they recorded a good victory at Rockcliffe winning 25 – 10.

There were 3 other Gosforth triples in action, 2 at Gosforth & Coxlodge; and home players J Anderson beat Gosforth’s Dave Lane. The other game Tony Heron took on Gosforth’s Dane Ross, Ross’s triple opened up a good lead and held this until the 14th end, where Heron’s triple, skipped by Nick Houghton scored a 3 to only trail 13 – 12. However for Ross’s triple managed to score on the three ends to take the tie 19 – 12. The last Gosforth triple saw a home victory for Chris Palmer over Bryon Weites from North Shields West End (skipped by Rob Campbell).

There was some good away wins, St. Georges Dragons triple, skipped by Phil Harvey won at New Delaval Knights, beating county colleague Ant Barke 18 – 10; across the green there was better news for the Knights where Ryan Warnes-Hall, although Ryan didn’t play last night and triple was skipped again by Alex Scott, and Scott beat Westerhope’s Gareth Heard 20 – 9. Benfield’d Jonny Morgan had a close contest at Seaton Sluice, edging out home favourite Ian Dickinson 14 – 11. Morgan’s clubmates had good victories tonight, Alan Pomfrey’s triple (skipped by Jonty King) beat Rothbury’s Mark Heron (skipped by Graeme Donkin) 18 – 12, and Pomfrey’s team mates Matthew Bishop won at Health & Seurity, beating Andy Bojke 24 – 10.

The final 3 games that were played on Friday saw three decisive home victories – St. Georges Dragons Neil Aitchison winning 27 – 2; Morpeth’s Wally Ray winning 21 – 9 and the final game saw Ashington’s George Richardson continuing his impressive form winning 20 – 7 against Newbiggin’s Lee Birch 20 – 7.

There were 2 games played earlier and again home advantage was pivotal, Seghill’s Ian Nolan winning 20 – 15 over Rockcliffe’s S Blackett, and Haltwistle’s Martin Rogan beating another Rockcliffe (P Watson) triple 25 – 7.
