Men’s Pairs Get Underway: Tight Finishes Galore as Drama Enfolds at Walker Park

By Your Green-Side Insider

The Men’s County Pairs championship got off to a highly competitive start, serving up a fantastic evening of close-quarters bowling and excellent team performances. However, the talk of the greens centered around one fixture that remains unfinished following an unprecedented turn of events.

With the opening matches now in the books, the remaining field will look to join the winners when Round 2 continues next Thursday.

Walker Park Drama Halts Father vs. Son Showdown

The highly anticipated club-clash and family derby between A. Johnson Jr (WK) and A. Johnson (BD) was unfortunately cut short after 15 ends due to a major incident at Walker Park. Police instructed all competitors to leave the green immediately for safety reasons, forcing an abrupt suspension of play. This fascinating father-vs-son battle is now scheduled to resume on Monday evening from the exact point it left off. We send our best wishes to everyone at Walker Park.

Beautifully Tight Finishes

When play did reach its natural conclusion elsewhere, the theme of the night was undoubtedly games decided by the narrowest of margins:

Pallas and Taylor in a Thriller: J. A. Taylor (PD) and S. Pallas (G) put on a spectacular exhibition, going toe-to-toe all the way to the final end where Taylor just managed to edge it 18–17.

One-Shot Wonders: D. Stringer (HE) held off a brilliant challenge from G. Adams (P) to secure a tight 16–15 win. Meanwhile, M. Hayden (ST) showed fantastic composure late on to pip B. Rodgerson (P) 17–16, and M. Heron (RY) travelled home happy after a beautifully played 16–15 victory over N. Houghton (G).

All-Gosforth Battle and Club Derbies: In a fantastic club matchup, G. Bennett (G) just got over the line 17–16 against clubmate S. Miller (G). Over on the adjacent greens, P. Duffy (G) also enjoyed a single-shot victory, securing a hard-fought 19–18 win over J. Orange (FH).

Strong Performances on the Green

While many had to scratch and claw for every shot, a few pairs managed to settle into an excellent rhythm early on:

Robson Sets the Standard: D. Robson (ST) put together a highly efficient and accurate performance to get past D. Leslie (P) 26–9.

Strong Wins for Watts and Alexander: C. Watts (NP) looked in great touch to record a 19–11 victory against M. London (C), while S. Alexander (WK) produced a fine display of drawing bowls to defeat D. Carter (PD) 18–7.

  • Brewis in Fine Rhythm: P. Brewis (WK) put on a very disciplined performance on his home turf, securing a strong 16–1 win against G. Richardson (PD).
