Thursday evening brought round 5 of the Men’s Pairs – and overall it was a great for the Dragons!
The first tie at the top of the draw saw a repeat of last season’s final – which saw holders Gosforth’s Josh Minto & Chris Yeomans take on St. George’s Dragons Alan Stewart & Steve Harvey. The game was tight through the first few ends, but from ends 5 to 10, Harvey scored on 4 of them – to lead 12 – 6. This advantage proved decisive and the St. Georges duo won 18 – 13.
Next to report on were two games at St. Georges – where home favourites of Chris McGready & Neil Aitchison took on another Gosforth pair in Dan Targar & Simon Richardson. Targar & Richardson started well, leading 7 – 2 at 5 ends, but this lead diminished by 10 ends, with Richardson only leading 8 – 7. And by 12 ends the scores were level at 9 all. McGready & Aitchison scored 2, 2 and a 4 to lead 17 – 9 at 15 ends and the game was conceded.
The other game at St. Georges saw home duo of Jonny Morgan & Darren Parkes take on yet another pair from Gosforth in Paul Timney & Jimmy Curtis. Morgan & Parkes started tremendously leading 11 – 0 at 5 ends. The Gosforth pair got on the board but still trailed 15 – 5 at 10 ends. This advantage stayed the same reaching 14 ends, with the score being 17 – 7, and a final score of 3 by Morgan & Parkes was the final nail and the victory was wrapped up 20 – 7.
The final game was at Percy, with Steve Roberts & Brian Rodgerson playing Ashington’s Christian Lowes & George Richardson. Through the first few ends there was nothing in the game, 4 all at 5 ends, and 9 – 8 to Rodgerson at 10 ends. The Percy duo then scored 5 consecutive ends to take the tie 19 – 8 after 16 ends.
The semi-finals sees an all St. Georges tie – with Steve Harvey taking on Neil Aitchison, and Brian Rodgerson playing Darren Parkes.
These semi-finals will be part of the semi-final programme – which is currently being put together.
