Men’s 4’s Holders Out

Friday evening brought the start of the Men’s Fours Championship.

There were a number of close games this evening, with no fewer than 4 games separated by one shot. This included the holders Ashington’s George Richardson who took on Collingwood’s Ian Brown away; Brown triumphed by winning on an extra end in deciding the game which saw the holders eliminated. Brown will have home advantage again next week and will take on St. Georges Dragons Phil Harvey, where Harvey overcome Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans tonight 18 – 16.

The other ties separated by 1 shot, were away wins for Morpeth’s Wally Ray over Rockcliffe’s Darryl Illingworth 17 – 16; the rink named entry (Matthew Bishop who was absent), skipped by Benfield’s Alan Proctor won at Forth, defeating Eddie Young 16 – 15. There was not good news for the Benfield rink skipped by Brian Rootham (entry under James Askwith) lost at Walker St. Peters to J Slasor (skipped by D Slasor) 19 – 18.

Other wins tonight saw two away wins for Gosforth, firstly Peter Duffy’s rink (skipped by Brian Houghton) won at Morpeth and Jimmy Curtis won at Haltwhistle. Duffy & Curtis’s clubmate Chris Palmer overcome Benfield’s Jonny Morgan 18 – 14. The final results saw a comprehensive home win for Portland’s young Grenville Richardson, defeating Gosforth’s George Bennett 26 – 7, and a home win at Wooler BC – where John Guthrie beat Collingwood’s Fabian Scott 18 – 15.
