BE National Finals Day 4

Back to news

Sunday at the National Finals featured the start of the Men’s Pairs and Men’s Senior Singles.

First up were our Men’s Pairs with both pairs from the St. Georges’ Dragons; our county champions of Jonny Morgan & Darren Parkes lost a close game 19 – 10 to Ash Edwards & Nick Lewis (Brimfield & Little Hereford, Herefordshire). Our other pairs of Alan Stewart & Steve Harvey record Northumberland’s first win this year at the nationals defeating Danny Twymann & Kyle Leeks from Cornard, Suffolk 23 – 12. Next up for Alan & Steve this afternoon was a pair from Poplar, Middlesex (Andrew Griggs & Will Allen), and our lads lost narrowly 15 – 10.

On the pairs (and nothing to do with Northumberland) but another pair from Suffolk has caused a bit of controversy, as the pair played two games today, winning both, then after their second game tonight conceded the next round – as I understand they are playing at Skegness in the EBF Finals on Tuesday.

On the EBF Finals – the county team – I believe the Adams team won this national title yesterday – beating Suffolk by 3 shots. I understand this is the first time since 1969 – huge well done to all concerned – and some of the players involved will be representing Bowls Northumberland at the BE National Finals – in Fours and also Middleton Cup. Well done and congratulations.

The final event or competition to report is the Men’s Senior Singles – with another Dragon (that is St. Georges) in Gary Myerscough took on Ken Weyand (St. Lwawrence, Kent) and Gary lost narrowly 21 – 19.  Another tie to advise was our Northern Counties neighbour from Lancashire in David Lockhart. David took on John Osborn (Harpenden, Hertfordshire) and David won the game 21 – 20, after being 20 – 8 down!

Tomorrow, Monday will see the start of the Women’s Senior Singles – but there is no one from Northumberland in this, as unfortunately we lost in the earlier regional rounds, as also we are paired with Durham. The Men’s Junior Singles also starts, with our county champion of Benfield’s Matty Bishop in action. Our other representative Westerhope’s Jan Walton was due to play, but unfortunately Jan is unwell and has conceded his game.

I will update results tomorrow, and we wish our players or player tomorrow the very best of luck.
