While the scorching sunshine was perfect for spectators, it proved a grueling test of endurance for the bowlers on a fast, warm green.
Thanks to an incredible team performance, Northumberland handled the heat beautifully to secure a fantastic 6-2 overall match victory (48 – 42 on shots aggregate).

The Story: Trailing 5-1 early on and 11-7 at end 12, our duo showed fantastic grit. They engineered a brilliant late fightback to claw the scoreline to a tight 13-12 by end 16.
The Finish: Yorkshire managed a late surge to take it 17-12, but Northumberland’s resilience to close the gap kept the overall aggregate vital.
Triples: A Barke, C McGready, & P Harvey (S)
The Story: After falling behind 7-3, Northumberland adjusted beautifully to the heat, closing the gap to 7-6 at end 8 before rocketing into a 12-9 lead by end 12.
The Finish: Holding off a late Yorkshire charge, Harvey’s trio stayed ice-cold under pressure to secure a fantastic 17-14 victory, banking our first 2 points!
Fours: G Robinson, R Curtis, S Richardson, & J Minto (S)
The Story: A total masterclass. Our Fours flew out of the blocks to lead 10-3 by end 6 and completely dominated the green to extend that cushion to a commanding 17-5 by end 11.
The Finish: Total control from start to finish, wrapping up an emphatic 19-10 win for another 2 discipline points.
Match Verdict: Northumberland 6 – 2 Yorkshire

Game 2: Northumberland Vs Durham
Northumberland Battle Durham and the Elements in Game 2Game 2 of the Balcomb Trophy brought a complete shift in conditions as the scorching sunshine gave way to a cold, biting wind. Facing local rivals Durham, Northumberland had to adjust rapidly to a much tougher, changing green.
It was a fiercely contested derby that tested the squad’s adaptability, leaving everything to play for in the final round.
Pairs: M Cymber & BJ Byles (S)
The Story: Durham found their weight early in the difficult conditions, opening a 6-0 lead by end 3. Our lads dug deep to answer back at end 4, closing to 6-4, but Durham’s back-end accuracy pushed the gap wide as the match progressed.
The Finish: Byles and Cymber rallied late on to break a scoring drought, picking up a great count of 4 at the death to finish 22-10.
Triples: A Barke, C McGready, & P Harvey (S)
The Story: A phenomenal, gritty display. After trailing 8-6 at end 7, Harvey’s trio staged a brilliant 5-shot surge to storm ahead 11-6. Durham fought back to lock the scores at 13-13 by end 13, setting up a grandstand finish.
The Finish: Showing exceptional nerve, Northumberland won the critical late exchanges to close out a magnificent 17-15 victory—banking 2 massive points!

The Story: A classic, tight derby battle. Locked at 4-4 by end 6, Minto’s rink played some superb tactical bowls to break away into a 9-6 lead by end 9. Durham responded well in the later stages, stringing together ends to edge back in front 13-10 by end 15.
The Finish: A hard-fought battle where every single bowl was contested to the millimeter.
Match Verdict: Grand Finale Awaits
While Durham took the overall match points this time, the tournament remains completely wide open.

With all teams incredibly locked on 8 points each, it all comes down to the final game against Cumbria at 3:30 PM. The script couldn’t be written any better. The lads are refuelling, refocusing, then ready to give it everything.

Balcomb Trophy: Northumberland Give Everything in Dramatic Game 3 FinaleThe final round against Cumbria tested Northumberland to the absolute limit as the weather took another turn, becoming colder with gentle showers drifting on and off for the afternoon decider. It was a heroic effort from the squad on a changing green, battling through to the very last end.
While the final math indicates we just missed out on the top spot to Yorkshire based on overall shot aggregate, Northumberland can be immensely proud of an incredible tournament performance, finishing the day with another superb round of rink victories.
Pairs: M Cymber & BJ Byles (S)The Story: Our duo started brilliantly despite the damp spells, jumping out to a 4-0 lead by end 2. It was a fierce, neck-and-neck battle through the middle ends, locked at 5-5 and 7-7, and still dead even at 9-9 by end 11.
The Finish: Cumbria found their weight perfectly in the late stages to push ahead, wrapping it up 23-12, but the fight shown by Byles and Cymber across the first two-thirds of the game was top-class.
Triples: A Barke, C McGready, & P Harvey (S)The Story: A stellar performance from a trio that has been magnificent all day. Leading 5-3 by end 5, they completely broke the game open between ends 8 and 11, unleashing a powerful scoring run to storm into a commanding 13-7 lead.
The Finish: Harvey’s side managed the game beautifully through the light showers, keeping Cumbria at arm’s length to secure an outstanding 16-11 victory and bank 2 more points!
Fours: G Robinson, R Curtis, S Richardson, & J Minto (S)The Story: An absolute show. Our Fours rink dominated from the opening delivery, flying to a 5-0 lead by end 4 and turning the screw to lead 11-5 by end 10. They didn’t let up, scoring heavily to lead 16-5 at end 12 and 19-6 by end 14.
The Finish: Total domination from Minto’s rink, playing superb front-end bowls to completely shut out Cumbria and secure an emphatic victory.
Final Tournament Verdict
It came down to the thinnest of margins. Thanks to magnificent wins in the Triples and Fours, Northumberland secured another 4 discipline points in Game 3.
To navigate scorching heat, bitter winds, and late showers, and only miss out on the top spot to Yorkshire on shot aggregate is a massive achievement.
