Day One Drama and Grit at Leamington Spa!

The Bowls England National Finals have burst into life, with a massive opening day featuring seven high-stakes matches for our Northumberland competitors across the rinks. From the opening end to the final bowl, our players showed immense heart and grit on the national stage.

Day One Round-Up

Women’s Junior Pairs Championship:

Morning Session (Rink E3): H. Lashley and K. Sultman got our campaign off to a flying start. In a thrilling battle against Surrey’s A. Karanth and Y. Hasan, our pair held their composure through a wave of momentum swings to secure a brilliant 18–15 victory and push into the next round.

Afternoon Session (Rink B3): Returning to the green later in the day, Lashley and Sultman faced a stern test against Durham’s C. Williams and A. Porter. Getting off to a wonderfully strong start in the first half of the game, our duo played some fantastic bowls before the Durham pair found their rhythm to pull away with a 28–12 win, concluding a stellar effort across a demanding double-header.

Men’s Junior Pairs Championship (Rink E5):

P. Shilton and A. Scott delivered a performance filled with determination against Lincolnshire’s N. Puttrell and O. Aspinall. Displaying exceptional control for most of the match, our pair built a commanding lead heading into the closing ends. However, finals bowls can turn in an instant, and a late surge from the Lincolnshire duo saw them snatch a narrow victory, with Scott and Shilton ultimately losing by just a single shot on the last end at 17–16.

Men’s Two Bowl Singles Championship:

Morning Session (Rink A5): A. Johnson Jr took on experienced Lincolnshire campaigner K. Ekins. Across a fast-paced and focused contest, Ekins managed to establish control early on, leaving Johnson Jr chasing the game before closing out an 18–8 win.

Afternoon Session (Rink D5): B. Davidson put on a display of pure grit on rink D5 against the Isle of Wight’s M. Butchers. In one of the most nail-biting encounters of the day, Davidson pushed his opponent all the way through a fierce battle, forcing the match all the way to an extra end before narrowly missing out at 15–14.

Pegasus Homes Men’s Over 60′ Pairs (a Rink C4):

K. King and J. Curtis represented Northumberland against Worcestershire’s S. Brough and M. Peirce. Facing a very experienced pairing, our duo battled hard across every end, showing great spirit before ultimately bowing out 23–11.

Women’s Two Bowl Singles Championship (Rink D3):

M. Angove rounded out a busy day for our county against Worcestershire’s A. Griffiths. In a high-quality singles contest where every point was hard-earned, Angove fought fiercely throughout before Griffiths edged the result 15–11.

While results went both ways, every single Northumberland representative played with immense pride and passion on day one. Rest up, reset, and let’s go again!
