Day Ten Grit and Triples Battles!
By the Green-side Insider
Friday at Leamington Spa brought another packed day of blue riband competition, featuring hard-fought battles, a brilliant comeback win, and our county rinks leaving everything out on the greens!
Day Ten Round-Up
Men’s Fours Championship (Morning Session – Rink B1):
P. Proctor, A. Pomfrey, P. Brimer, and D. Ross (Benfield) returned to the green to face Essex’s strong Kings Chase four (S. Reading, C. Fleming, S. Mitchinson, and J. Holmes). After a slow start that saw them carrying some unfortunate rub of the green while Essex capitalized with a flurry of early scores at 3–0 and 8–3, our Benfield lads dug deep to find their rhythm. However, by the time they hit their stride, the early damage proved too steep to climb back from as Essex closed out a 21–9 win. A fantastic tournament run from the Benfield boys nonetheless!
Women’s Triples Championship (Afternoon Session – Rink A3):
M. Ross, R. Cartwright, and K. Proctor (Benfield) kicked off their championship campaign against Herefordshire’s Bromyard triple (H. Urquhart, B. Zorab, and J. Brooke). In a tightly contested battle where Proctor’s rink needed two shots on the final end to level, Proctor played a brave fire shot trying to edge the jack for three. Sadly, only the single shot bowl moved, leaving them one down and sealing a narrow 15–12 defeat. They played with immense heart throughout!
Women’s Triples Championship (Afternoon Session – Rink C1):
C. Formosa, P. Bell, and A. Stevenson (Gosforth & Coxlodge) put on a sensational display of resilience against Sussex’s Southwater triple (D. Coshan, V. Mellor, and D. Jarvis). After a true game of two halves that saw them trailing heavily at 13–3, the Gosforth & Coxlodge trio staged an astonishing fightback! Leveling the score at 14–14 by the 15th end, they swept ahead with a 16–14 lead on the 16th, an 18–14 lead on the 17th, and closed it out in style at 20–14 to advance!
Women’s Triples Championship (Late Afternoon Session – Rink C5):
Returning for the next round, C. Formosa, P. Bell, and A. Stevenson faced a formidable Surrey East triple from Southey (E. Anderson, Y. Hasan, and D. Souter). Keeping pace early at 11–9 down after 6 ends, our ladies unfortunately ran into a red-hot Surrey side that pulled away to 15–9 and 22–9, before the match concluded at 30–10 after 14 ends. A superb effort to reach this stage of the national championship!
