Tight Battles and Statement Wins
The County Pairs championship surged into Round 3 this week, delivering a mix of high-scoring masterclasses and absolute nail-biters that kept spectators on edge. With the field now thinning, every tie carries massive significance as rinks push for a spot in the latter stages.
The Grandstand Finishes: Single-Shot Dramas
Two fixtures this round proved that no lead is safe, as both matches went right down to the final wood:
Robson Edges Past Harvey in a Thriller: In what was arguably the match of the round, D. Robson (ST) and P. Harvey (G) locked horns in a superb contest. With nothing to separate the two sides throughout, Robson’s unit managed to hang tough right to the end to pip Harvey 18–17.
Erskine Denies Timney: In a classic display of competitive bowls, P. Erskine (SS) and P. Timney (G) went toe-to-toe in a high-tension encounter. Both pairs traded high-quality ends throughout, but it was Erskine who ultimately found the decisive wood to clinch a narrow 17–14 victory.
Bowyer Survives Donaghy Challenge: M. Bowyer (ST) and S. Donaghy (AM) treated us to an absorbing, back-and-forth encounter. But it was Bowyer who found the necessary accuracy in the final moments to squeeze through 17–16.
Dominant Displays and Statement Victories
While some matches were decided by the narrowest of margins, several ties hit their stride early, putting their opponents under immense pressure from the first end.
Johnson Puts Down a Marker: A. Johnson (BD) produced an exhibition of drawing bowls to beat D. Henderson (C) in a comprehensive 24–3 victory. The Benfield duo’s precision left little room for a comeback.
Leeson Hits Top Gear: R. Leeson (M) showed his pedigree with a dominant 24–10 win over D. Wright (WK). His rink maintained a relentless pace that proved too much for the opposition to handle.
Yeomans in Command: In an all-Gosforth derby, C. Yeomans (G) demonstrated why he is such a feared competitor, keeping B. Houghton (G) at bay to record a convincing 18–4 victory.
Bennett and Jameson Advance: G. Bennett (G) continued his strong tournament form by dispatching G. Cross (F) 20–9, while L. Jameson (G) navigated a tricky tie against J. Morgan (ST) to advance 21–13.
Around the Greens: Notable Progress
Miller and Myerscough Move On: G. Miller (F) showed excellent composure to defeat A. Shieber (ND) 18–10, and G. Myerscough (ST) put together a very professional performance to overcome W. Penton (F) 18–11.
Heron and Byles Victorious: M. Heron (RY) looked in fine touch, defeating S. Alexander (WK) 16–8, while BJ Byles (G) combined beautifully with his partner to see off D. Pygall (PD) 18–9.
Shaw’s Solid Shift: In a well-managed game, D. Shaw (R) held off a resilient T. Carson (under T Whalen’s name) (BD) 16–12.
Update on the Aitchison/Clough Tie
The final fixture between D. Clough (CN) and defending champions, N. Aitchison (ST) has been postponed to next week to accommodate international commitments. Once again, we would like to extend our warmest congratulations to C. McGready (ST) (& G Robinson, ND), who recently represented the country at the British Bowls Para Series as part of a gold medal-winning squad!
With the rest of the results now confirmed, the road to the final is becoming increasingly clear. The quality of bowls has been exceptional, and we look forward to the next round of the competition.
