Men’s Triples

Back to news

The  Men’s Triples continued this evening, with the second round taking place, and saw the holders along with past winners surviving a scare to book their places and progress in to the next round.

On to the current triples holders of Morpeth’s Nick Armstrong, Bob Leeson and Wally Ray travelled to Hexham House and faced Clive Knott (Entry under Dan Stringer); the Morpeth trio trialled 14 – 12 @ 14 ends, but scored two 5’s, one on end 15 and another on end 17, and wrapped up the victory scoring a double on the last end to take the victory 24 – 16.

Past and multiple winners in Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans took on St. Georges and county clubmate Gary Myerscough away, Yeomans this year playing with Dan Targar and Steve Pallas, who subbed for Josh Minto (who is away) – and it looked like being a possible good home win, with the St. Georges team winning 15 – 4 with only 6 ends remaining. But the Gosforth trio scored on the last 6 ends (1, 3, 3, 3, 2, and a single) to take the tie 17 – 15. Next up for Chris is another away trip, this time at Collingwood, where they will play Alan Hall (entry under Tom Birdsey); Hall was another team to come back and win, as Hall trailed 12 – 7 at 15 ends, but scored 1, 4 and a 2 to win 14 – 12 at Northumberland Linskill against Chris Watts.

In addition there was a game at Collingwood where 19 singles were scored, with 9 singles each in the 18 ends, so it meant an extra end was required to separate the sides – with Gosforth’s Brian Houghton (entry in Mike Bennett) securing the vital and of course yet another single to take the tie 10 – 9 against home favourite Vince Hills.

Other notable results saw Westerhope’s Luke Heard, along with fellow Under 18 player Jan Walton and Luke’s dad Gareth beat Benfield’s Jonty King away in a close contest 16 – 14, where Luke overcome 4 – 0 and 10 – 2 deficits.  There were good home wins for Cramlington’s Tony ‘doughnuts’ Fantozzi over Forest Hall’s Chris Coan, but there was better news for Coan’s club colleague Dave Bell who beat Health & Security’s Stu Williams. Across the green at Benfield, saw Benfield’d Brian Rootham (entry under P Carr) beating Collingwood’s Ian Brown 26 – 6 after 12 ends. And the last home wins to advise saw another home win for Ashington’s George Richardson edging out St. Georges Darren Parkes in another close game 17 – 15, and finally New Delaval Knights and 2 Wood Singles Champion Graham Sivell winning a close contest edging out Rothbury’s Graeme Donkin

There were good away wins for Gosforth’s Mal Cooper at Ashington, Seghill’s Ian Nolan at Gosforth, Haltwhistle’s M Davidson winning at Benfield, two Morpeth triples had good wins at Portland – M Brown beating John Bartlett and Malcolm Milner beating John Taylor, and Rothbury’s Rob Donkin wining at Cowpen & Crofton.

On the results it must have been a late finish for some, as several results were not reported until Saturday morning – and another result was reported after midnight this morning – May I remind you – calls no later 10pm – that doesn’t mean 00:15, which is not acceptable.

Also please ensure ALL names are added to the scorecard(s), along with the competition and tie number please.  I realise most of you do this anyway – and for those that do thank you very much.

Last one or bit from me – if you are conceding a game, or don’t have a team – please advise myself at the earliest opportunity. There have been occasions this year where teams have gone to play a tie, and the home team do no have a team and have conceded. This is poor – so please give an early indication to myself, your opposition – after all it would save people traveling – this happened again last night and also in the first round. So please bear this in mind, and as I say early notifications would be most appreciated by all – thank you.

Well done to all concerned and the next round takes place on Friday.
