Men’s 2 Wood Last 32

Back to news

The Men’s 2 Wood singles championship continued tonight with the conclusion of the last 32. At the start of the evening there 7 former champions in the reckoning but now only 4 remain.

Amongst the 4 are two former double champions, Wooler’s Brian Davidson, who recorded a convincing home win over Lesbury’s Alan Sample. Davidson will have home advantage (again), and will face Goforth’s Paul Timney who had a good win over former champion and St. Georges’ Dragon 15 – 8. The other former double champion still in the running is Timney’s clubmate Simon Richardson, where Simon recorded an away win at Benfield, defeating Paul Lunn.

The two former champions to remain in contention are Gosforth’s Brian Houghton, who defeated club mate Chris Brown 16 – 12; and St. Georges Dragon Karl Jameson beating Forth’s Wayne Penton.  Across the green at St. Georges there was an impressive home victory for Michael Barrass beating Gosforth’s Chris Yeomans 15 – 12.  The last two former champions to go out were Gosforth’s Michael Bennett, losing to his son Daniel, where Dan collected a double on the last end to win 14 – 12; and the final one to bite the dust was Benfield’s Jonny Morgan, who lost on a extra end 14 – 13 to Ashington’s Paul Freeman – where Paul scored 5 singles on the last 5 ends to tie the game up at 13 all and Paul scored the decisive one to take the tie. Freeman now plays St. Georges Kevin Blaylock, and hopefully this game will be played – as Kevin has had 3 walkovers to this point, which is the same as Benfield’s Stan Lant. Stan will have home advantage next week and will take on Gosforth’s James McKenna, where James had a good away win over Portland’s Gren Richardson.

The final few games to report saw Gosforth & Coxlodge Nick Houghton defeat 2021 runner up in Gosforth’s Dan Targar 16 – 11; Collingwood’s Martin Hayden won at Seaton Sluice, defeating home favourite Ian Dickinson 16 – 9. Benfield’s Paul Proctor recorded a good away win, defeating Gosforth’s Josh Minto 15 – 10. The final game and result, and saw another extra end – this time Forth’s John Whitfield beat Cramlington’s David Clough 16 – 14.

The last 16 is scheduled for next Monday – although some ties may be played beforehand.
