Bottom Half Battle Heats Up
By Your Green-Side Insider
The race for the Blue Riband Men’s Singles is narrowing as the bottom half of the draw completes a high-octane Round 3. With the top half already sorted, the competition is beginning to take its final shape, and the standard of bowls on display continues to be truly exceptional.
Next week, the full field of 32 remaining competitors will descend on the greens for Round 4. All eyes are already fixed on a headline clash between the 2024 champion J. Minto (G) and the current titleholder BJ Byles (G)—a repeat of recent history that promises to be the tie of the round.
Round 3 Highlights: Bottom Half
The intensity was palpable as the following players secured their spots in the next round:
Dominant Displays: J. Bateman (AM) showed his quality with a 21–17 win over M. Knights (CN), while S. Harvey (G) marched on with an emphatic 21–6 victory against F. Scott (C).
Tactical Battles: D. Shaw (R) edged out a tight contest against A. Rayner (P) 21–18, and W. Penton (F) similarly navigated a close encounter with J. Anderson (GC) 21–18.
Gosforth Momentum: The club continues to exert its influence, with J. Minto (G) proving too strong for last year’s runner-up, A. Stewart (ST) (21–13), BJ Byles (G) defeating I. Whitaker (SS) (21–14), and L. Jameson (G) overcoming S. Pallas (G) (21–12).
Other Notable Advancements: M. Shepherd (NB) moved into the next round by beating I. Sandwell (WK) 21–14, D. Leslie (P) secured a solid 21–16 win over P. Green (HS), and A. Pomfrey (BD) put in a commanding performance to defeat M. Wilson (AM) 21–9.
A Field of Champions
As we move toward the business end of the tournament, the pedigree in the remaining draw is quite remarkable. We currently have SIX former Men’s Singles champions still in the hunt for the 2026 title:
- B. Houghton (1995 Champion)
- P. Harvey (G) (2012 Champion)
- J. King (BD) (2021 Champion)
- S. Richardson (G) (2023 Champion)
- J. Minto (G) (2024 Champion)
- BJ Byles (G) (2025 Champion)
This year’s competition features an extraordinary concentration of recent titleholders. Every match from here on out is effectively a clash of county heavyweights.
