Thursday evening staged the quarter finals of the Men’s Pairs, and there were good home wins in the first 3 ties and a high scoring contest in the final game tonight.
There was also a common theme with the first 3 victories tonight saw the home win teams progress but each team or pair also scoring 25 shots. The first result in tonight was the all St. Georges affair between Darren Parkes & Phil Harvey up against Alan Docherty & Neil Aitchison, and it was a good evening for the Parkes and Harvey partnership winning convincingly 25 – 4 (and even dropped a 3 on the very first end).
The next results through also saw home wins recorded – and this time for two Gosforth duo’s, and a bad evening for Hexham (Elvaston & House). Former winners Josh Minto & Chris Yeomans scored a good win over Hexham Elvaston’s Steve Bennett & Mal Cooper 25 – 10; the other Gosforth duo to triumph was Michael Cymber & Simon Richardson who defeated Mike McDonnell & Clive Knott 25 – 13. The Gosforth winning duo’s will now face each in the semi-final.
The final result of the evening was from Seaton Sluice BC where home players Paul Brookwell & Tim Burbridge faced Newbiggin’s Billy Waters & Lee Birch. In a high scoring contest, which included a maximum count of 8, a 6 and 4 4’s in total, saw the Newbiggin duo get off to a great start, scoring an 8 on the 6th end and by the 9th end they led 16 – 5. However Brookwell & Burbridge hit back to score the next 9 shots, to only trail 16 – 14 @ 12 ends. But then they lost counts of 6 and a 4 on the next 2 ends to trail by 12 shots (26 – 14), despite scoring 2 more counts of 4 the Seaton Sluice duo could not claw the game back and Waters & Birch advanced winning 32 – 23. Waters & Birch will now face Parkes & Harvey in the semi final.
