Forest up for the Challenge

Back to news

Saturday brought the final county cup final where the Challenge Cup was played at Alnwick BC.

There were 5 teams competing, with 4 previous winners – Forest Hall, Willington Quay, Health & Security, Haltwhistle and Benfield.

After the first two games there were possibly 3 teams in the running – Haltwhistle, Benfield and Forest Hall. In the third game Benfield were up against Forest Hall with a one shot disadvantage from the game earlier in the day. Benfield pulled away at the end and recorded a good 11 – 5 victory, and an overall 18 – 13 win and a crucial 2 points.

This put Benfield slight favourites going into the final game as they were the only club with a 100% record with 4 points out of 4. In the final game(s) Benfield were 1 behind Haltwhistle, and had a 4 shot advantage over Willington Quay. Forest Hall had recorded two good wins in the morning, 13 – 4 over Willington Quay and 15 – 6 over Health & Security, so without any disasters Forest Hall would secure another 4 points, to add to their 2 points collected earlier.

Therefore the crunch game seemed to be the contest between the rink of Benfield’s Jonty King and Haltwhistle’s Mal Davidson. The game was tight early on and Haltwhistle held a slight advantage; but over the last 3 ends King’s rink scored 8 shots to take the 2 points. However on the other Benfield rink against Willington Quay it was a different story, and saw a great win for Willington Quay 12 – 3, meaning Willington Quay took the vital 2 points away from Benfield.

Therefore the title would be decided on shots difference, as Benfield and Forest Hall had finished with 6 points each. As a result of the good wins for Forest Hall mainly over Health & Security by an aggregate of 22 shots, and a 9 shot win over Willington Quay meant the cup was on its way to Forest Hall.

Final Results: –

1st – Forest Hall 6 points +29 (82 – 53)

2nd – Benfield 6 points +10 (67 – 57)

3rd – Health & Security 4 points -15 (56 – 71)

4th – Haltwhistle 2 points -4 (65 – 69)

5th – Willington Quay 2 points -20 (47 – 67)
